I wrote this in 1982 over several days while visiting a friend in Brighton. I had taken several memorable journeys to Europe by this time, mainly to France and Spain, and the poem is inspired by recollections of the experiences and sensations of these journeys while sitting in small cafes or by the sea in Brighton.
It;s the first example of my "travel poetry", reflecting the way one can feel quite different when on an interesting journey to new and unfamiliar places. It might be described as a work of "travel mysticism".
